LG's new G Watch gets Android Gear, voice commands, water resistance

How many smartwatches can the market sustain at one time? This year we're likely to find out. The latest to be added to the list is LG's first smartwatch, called the G Watch. It's also one of the first smartwatches to run on Google's new Android-based smartwatch OS, Android Wear.

What we know now

The G Watch will be available to order later today, June 25, 2014. No word yet on price. The watch have a water-resistant body.

The watch runs Android Gear, so any reminders you create on your watch will be automatically synced to your Android phone. Other features include easily setting a do not disturb mode -- simply swipe down on the display -- and voice commands.

g-watch-2.jpgNever reach into your pocket/purse again? Not likely, but the accessibility of smartwatches is one of their few notable perks. James Martin/CNET

Simply say "Set an alarm for 7am" and your watch's alarm to start blaring at the appropriate time. The watch will also display boarding passes when at an airport.

That last detail is interesting. During the demo at Google I/O, the watch's display didn't make the best impression. Colors looked drab and the screen resolution looked anachronously low.

g-watch-3.jpgMaybe it's the quality of a pic captured from a stage demo screen, put I can't help but think "Commodore 64" when looking at some of these. I'll reserve final judgment however until we get some hands-on images. James Martin/CNET

That was only a stage demo however, so we'll have to wait for some hands-on time before we can judge its quality fairly.

Look for much more on the G Watch later today.

This is a developing story. Follow CNET's Google I/O live blog and see all of today's Google I/O news.
