BLU releases two new unlocked devices, the Life 8 and Vivo IV

BLU Products may not be a big player in the US market — in fact, the company is practically unknown — but with the devices that it's been releasing lately, we could see the company growing quickly. Today, BLU announced two new devices called the Vivo IV and the Life 8.

The BLU Vivo IV actually has me pretty intrigued. The device comes in at an incredible 5.5mm thick and is made almost entirely out of metal. In fact, 98 percent of its frame is made out of aluminum and glass. It's milled from a solid block of aluminum too, so you build quality enthusiasts are sure to like it.

Inside is a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, a 1.7GHZ octa-core MediaTek MT6592 (a true octa-core) processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front facing camera and a 2,300 mAh battery. For the most part, this screams high-end. And as for the price? The Vivo IV now available unlocked for only $299.

The BLU Life 8 is a little more budget-oriented. It shares the same octa-core processor, but with a 5-inch 720p IPS display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front facing camera, a 2,000 mAh battery, dual-SIM capabilities and a thickness of 7.5mm. It's now on sale for $199.

It should be noted that both devices have no support for LTE, just HSPA+ 21, which is a big downside for folks in the US. Also, they ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean preinstalled. The good news is that their KitKat updates are promised by the end of June.

These handsets pack some serious specs for the price point, especially the BLU Vivo IV. The lack of LTE is a disappointment, but otherwise, I'd love to give one a shot.
