A new report from the research firm Strategy Analytics claims that over 1 billion Android smartphones shipped worldwide in 2014. That's compared to "just" 800 million smartphones using some version of Google's mobile OS that shipped in 2013.

Strategy Analytics says that overall, smartphone shipments increased from 1 billion in 2013 to 1.3 billion in 2014. Android-based smartphones claimed a whopping 81% of the market last year, according to their report. The firm claims that only Apple's iOS platform remains a serious threat to Android; with 192.7 million smartphones shipping worldwide in 2014 and taking 15% of the market. Devices with Microsoft's Windows Phone had 38.8 million smartphones units ship in 2014, claiming the other 3% of the market.
