Indian handset manufacturer Spice announced that it intends to launch its first Android One smartphone in the country by the end of October. Spice Retail CEO Devices T M Ramakrishnan announced that the device would be available before Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, which is celebrated this year on October 23.

Announced at this year's Google I/O, the Android One platform is a turnkey solution that allows manufacturers in emerging countries like India to launch affordable devices. Under the initiative, Google will offer pre-selected hardware to vendors, who can then customize the design. All Android One devices will run stock Android, although manufacturers will have the option of adding a few apps of their own.

While exact specifications of Spice's Android One device are unclear, it is estimated to feature a dual-core MediaTek CPU, dual-SIM functionality, FM radio and a WVGA display. The main selling point behind Android One phones is the price, which is said to be under $100.

Google is partnering with three manufacturers in India for the Android One platform: Micromax, Karbonn Mobiles and Spice. While not official yet, other vendors like Celkon and Intex are said to be in talks to get in on the program. Which isn't surprising, as Google is set to undertake a massive $1 billion advertising effort in India for Android One. Initially, the search giant is said to have earmarked around $18 million (INR 100 crores), with subsequent marketing efforts set to total $1 billion.
