According to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, it looks like Intel may be supplying the processor for the next iteration of Google Glass, which is expected to arrive sometime next year. The move would see Intel's chips replacing the Texas Instruments chips currently used in Google's head-mounted wearable.
While it isn't clear which processor Intel will be supplying for the next version of Google Glass, the Wall Street Journal reports that this is part of a broader strategy that has recently seen the company dipping its toes into the wearables space:
Intel has targeted wearables with products that include an ultra-small x86 processor called Quark, a tiny circuit board for wearable devices called Edison and a chip called SoFIA that combines a processor with cellular communications.
In addition to providing its chips for the next Google Glass, the Wall Street Journal also reports that, according to one of its sources, "Intel plans to promote Glass to companies such as hospital networks and manufacturers, while developing new workplace uses for the device." This wouldn't be a first for the wearable, as it has seen professional use in everything from airports to surgery rooms.
