Stubby moves in any direction and is controlled by a converted PlayStation controller. You can build your own for pretty cheap.
Back in April, Hackaday hosted a contest where makers submitted their science-fiction-inspired projects to win some geeky prizes. One entrant was Stubby, a fully functional hexapod robot inspired by the replicators from the "Stargate SG-1" television series.
In the two months since the contest, the hexabot's creator Wyatt Olson and his crew have been actively working to make it even better. On Sunday, Olson released a video detailing the progress they've made on version 3. In the video, Olson demonstrates the six-legged hexabot walking, turning, and rotating its body along the XYZ axes, and it's all controlled by an adapted PlayStation 2 controller.
If you're interested in building a hexabot for yourself, Olson and his team built Stubby using cheap internal components so that, with a few simple tools, anyone can build one for about $150. You can find more information on how to build a hexabot for yourself on Stubby's project page.
