After expanding to several South Asian markets earlier this year, Xiaomi is getting set to launch in India. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Chinese handset vendor will offer its handsets exclusively on Flipkart, India's largest online retailer.
Xiaomi is initially expected to launch two smartphones in the Indian market within the next two to three months. The deal with Flipkart is said to be in the final stages, and following a successful negotiation between both parties, Xiaomi could be listed on the Indian retailer's site sometime next month.
Xiaomi's move to partner with Flipkart echoes what other manufacturers have been doing in recent times. Motorola similarly went with Flipkart to exclusively offer the Moto X, Moto G and the Moto E in India. Earlier this month, Alcatel also started offering its wares exclusively on the site.
While Flipkart has lined up a majority of the deals, other retailers like Snapdeal and Amazon are also catching on. Amazon's exclusive titles have largely included devices from local vendors like the Lava IRIS X1, Karbonn Titanium Hexa and Xolo Q1011, but the retailer recently announced that it would be stocking Samsung's Galaxy K Zoom exclusively.
Once considered to be a risky move, more and more brands are starting to offer their wares online, thanks to the minimal up-front investment. Xiaomi is already well-known for releasing short quantities of devices via flash sales, often selling up to 10,000 handsets in a matter of minutes.
Are you guys excited about Xiaomi coming to India? What devices do you think will be offered in the country?
