Sony Xperia Z1 compact launches on Three in the UK

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Sony fans in the UK have a new option if they want a smaller handset: the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is now available on Three. Launching today both in stores and online, the Xperia Z1 Compact can be had for £29-a-month on a contract plan, or upfront for a relatively affordable £359.99 if you go for the pre-paid option.

Overall, we'd call ourselves fans of the Xperia Z1 Compact. It brings all of the power of the larger flagship Xperia Z1, but in smaller package. One might even call it "compact", though it's a little disconcerting that a 4.3-inch screen is considered "compact" these days.

Earlier this month both the Z1 and Z1 Compact, as well as the Z Ultra, received software updates to Android 4.4 KitKat, bringing refreshed UI and a selection of new KitKat features.

Now that the Z1 Compact is available on Three, who is going to take the plunge? Or are new options from HTC and upcoming options from Samsung more tempting?

Press release:

Boasting the same standout tech features as its bigger brother the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z1 Compact is a small and stylish version of Sony's flagship handset, and is now available on Three both in-store and online.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is available for an upfront cost of £29 on four different 24 month contract plans. For £40 a month you get all-you-can eat data and all-you-can-eat minutes, through to £34 for 600 minutes and 2GB of data.

Alternatively the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is available for £359.99 with Three's market leading Pay As You Go rates of 3p a minute, 2p a text and 1p a MB of data.

Featuring the Z1's amazing 20.7MP camera with Exmor RS™ sensor for higher sensitivity and decreased photographic noise, plus other features such as Superior Auto focus where it recognises up to 36 different scene types, the camera can adjust automatically to capture the perfect shot. Sylvia Chind, head of devices at Three, said: "The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has the same qualities you'd expect from a digital camera and is therefore perfect for photographers or people that simply don't want to be carrying several gadgets around with them.

"Its portability and size means that you can take the device anywhere and capture moments as they happen. So even when you are on holiday you can easily share your crystal clear pictures to Facebook immediately. Plus if you are a Three customer you can share to their heart's content with Feel at Home*, safe in the knowledge that you won't incur any international roaming charges." The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is also waterproof** and dust resistant and features a STAMINA mode to improve standby time, so it's perfect for long haul trips, where preserving battery life is priceless.
