Lenovo's 13-inch Yoga Tablet 2 adds a Quad-HD display and Windows 8.1

Lenovo is adding yet another Yoga Tablet to its roster, this time in the form of a 13-inch device that runs Windows 8.1. The new device sports the same bulging cylindrical edge as the 8- and 10-inch Android and Windows 8.1 models we saw earlier this month, but adds a higher resolution 2,560x1,440-pixel display and bumps the storage capacity up to 64GB. It can also pair with a detachable Bluetooth keyboard that will double as a cover.

The Yoga Tablets remain curious devices. While the majority of tablets are content to take on similar flat-slab designs, Lenovo's devices rest on a hinge that serves as a sort of kickstand, and rotates about 180 degrees to offer a few angles to prop the device up. My colleague Sarah Mitroff wasn't too impressed with the 1,280x800-pixel display on last year's model, but far higher resolutions and the tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system make for a far more tantalizing prospect.

Things are looking promising with the rest of the hardware, too. A quad-core Intel Atom processor and 4GB of RAM join the aforementioned 64GB of storage, and a MicroSD card slot lets you add another 64GB of expandable storage. Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n Wi-Fi are joined by a Micro-HDMI and Micro-USB port, and there's a 1.6-megapixel camera up front. It also packs a pair of speakers and a subwoofer into its frame, which is a scant 0.6 inches (1.5cm) wide at the hinge and tapers down to 0.2 inches (.5cm).

The tablet is a bit heavier than most at 2.27 pounds (about 1kg, and not including the detachable keyboard), but Lenovo also claims the 13-inch Yoga Tablet will eke out up to 15 hours of battery life, care of a 12,800mAh battery. Last year's Android-based model packed a 9,000mAh battery and saw just over 12 hours of life in our battery tests.

This new 13-inch model lacks the Pico projector we saw in the $499 Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro, also announced earlier this month. That device runs Android, and sports the same 2,560x1,440 resolution. The inclusion of a projector would've been pretty cool here, though I'll admit I'd be hard pressed to find a use for it once the novelty wore off.

The 13-inch Yoga 2 Tablet will be available in the US starting in November for $699. There's no word on availability or pricing for other regions yet, but that pricing works out to about £440 or AU$790.
