LG has announced a new 5.1-inch full-HD display panel today with a bezel width of just 0.7mm, which the vendor claims is the narrowest in the world. LG is no stranger to innovations in the display segment, as the vendor announced the thinnest display in the world earlier this year, although today's announcement breaks LG's previous record of 2.2mm bezel size.
LG mentions that it had to use two processes — the Neo Edge module processing technology and the world's first Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology — to achieve a bezel width that is narrower than the thickness of a credit card (which is 0.8mm). The Neo Edge technology sees the use of an adhesive instead of double-sided tape to seal the areas around the panel's circuit board as well as the backlight unit.
Doing so helps in reducing the bezel size as the vendor does not have to resort to using a plastic guide to attach the panel to the LCD backlight. The adhesive also reduces leakage of light, enhances durability and provides resistance to water and dust. By using an adhesive, LG is also able to prevent corrosion from occurring around the edges of the panel, which can be the case sometimes when double-sided tape is used.
The AIT technology also assists in the reduction of bezel size, as the touch panel is embedded into the LCD module. As there isn't a need for another touch component, using this technology is cost effective for LG.
The vendor has stated that mass production would begin in November, with Chinese customers getting first access to hardware featuring the new display, as demand for large-screen devices is high in the country.
